In contrast, heterogeneous VEGF expression by ALL cells caused the growth of enlarged vessels, characterized by heterogeneous diameters, the presence of multiple lumens and a lack of normal pericytes, substituted by a thick coat of smooth muscle cells expressing both NG2 and SMA, similar to the progressively growing angioma‐like vascular structures previously observed in similar conditions 3, 5, 17. The gene discussed is VEGFA; the disease is acute lymphoblastic leukemia.
