SQSTM1/p62 plays a key role in a variety of vital cellular processes, but it is unexpected that its absence is compatible with survival above age of 40 years (Haack et al., 2016), and mice lacking SQSTM1/p62 were fertile and lived more than 1 year inspite of adult-onset obesity and diabetes (Komatsu et al., 2007). This evidence concerns the gene SQSTM1 and diabetes mellitus.
