TERT and cancer: Recently, recurrent activating mutations in the core promoter of Telomerase Reverse Transcriptase (TERT), causing an increase in telomerase activity have been found in about 30–55% of primary melanomas depending on studies and up to 85% of metastatic cases and studied as an independent prognostic factor in different types of cancers including melanoma [21–28], with conflicting results regarding the association with BRAF mutations [29, 30].
