In contrast, Doll et al[28] found that low-level ERCC1 expression was associated with poorer survival in patients with cervical cancer receiving radiation alone, suggesting that the poor outcomes of patients with low-level ERCC1 expression were not related directly to the repair of radiation-induced DNA damage by the ERCC1-dependent DNA repair pathway, but rather to the emergence of a more aggressive tumor phenotype reflecting a reduced DNA repair capacity when radiation alone was prescribed.
