Overexpression of tyrosinase leads to the massive oxidation of L-Dopa and dopamine into dopaquinone and dopamine quinone, both of which are found to result in neuronal damage and cell death, linking tyrosinase to neurodegenerative diseases, especially Parkinson’s disease (PD) (Tessari et al., 2008). The gene discussed is TYR; the disease is neurodegenerative disease.
