Batt and colleagues investigated whether SSB consumption may differentially influence gout risk and serum uric acid levels with variants in the SLC2A9 locus among 1,634 Polynesian and Caucasian individuals living in New Zealand (N.Z.)[a region with higher prevalence of gout (64)] and 7,075 Caucasians living in the U.S. SLC2A9 encodes the GLUT9 facilitative transporter which is a high affinity transporter for uric acid (65).
