The hexanucleatide expansion in the C9orf72 gene on chromosome 9 is most typically associated with FTD with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (Rohrer et al., 2015a), but up to half of patients have parkinsonism, with decreased dopamine transporter levels in the basal ganglia (Boeve et al., 2012; O’Dowd et al., 2012). This evidence concerns the gene SLC6A3 and frontotemporal dementia.
