It is therefore not surprising that a comprehensive review of breast cancer biomarkers in 2007 by the Update Committee of the American Society of Clinical Oncology failed to recommend any of the most promising candidates, including blood levels of CA 15-3 and CA 27.29 (both forms of mucin-1) for diagnosis, detection of recurrence, decisions on therapy or metastasis, or circulating truncated extracellular HER2 for detection of breast cancer [53].
