AQP4 and brain edema: It has been suggested that AQP4 may serve as the primary conduit for the entry of water, and numerous studies have shown that interfering with AQP4 expression (Manley et al., 2000), localization (Amiry-Moghaddam et al., 2003, 2004), or function (Igarashi et al., 2010) can be an effective means of reducing the severity of the cerebral edema in the wake of an ischemic insult and improving animal survival and neurological outcome.
