Indeed, from one hand, this enzyme is highly expressed in nascent atherosclerotic plaques and is involved in multiple stages of atherosclerosis, and this explains the positive association between Lp-PLA2 activity and increased risk of coronary heart disease [18–20], while, from the other side, parallel studies have clearly shown that overexpression of this enzyme reduces atherosclerosis in mice [21] and in rabbits [22]. Here, PLA2G7 is linked to atherosclerosis.
