Although there is no significant difference reported between Nfatc1-mutant and wild-type mice during normal cartilage development or in the post-traumatic osteoarthritis animal model, cartilage-specific ablation of Nfatc1 in Nfatc2−/− mice markedly accelerated osteoarthritis development [31], which indicates that Nfatc1 may act as an osteoarthritis-suppressor.
