The reduced expression of the canalicular transporters ABCC2, ABCG2 and of the cholesterol transporter ABCG5 leads to impaired bile acid, bilirubin and cholesterol excretion and in the long term to intrahepatic cholestasis as was observed in DILI patients treated with diclofenac. Here, ABCG2 is linked to intrahepatic cholestasis.
