In our experiments, the changes in expression of genes involved in the glutamatergic synapses in aging are concordant with the evidence that P301L tau expression increased hippocampal glutamate release and decreased glutamate uptake, and these alterations in glutamate signaling correlated with cognitive deficits in the hippocampal-dependent Barnes maze task (Hunsberger et al., 2015). This evidence concerns the gene MAPT and Cognitive impairment.
