Growth hormone is a well-known regulator of skeletal homeostasis and is critically involved in regulating normal longitudinal bone growth and bone mass.15,16 Clinical studies have shown that adults deficient in GH suffer from low bone turnover osteoporosis, which leads to an increased risk of fracture and mortality.17,18 Since patients examined with varying severities of TBI (mild, moderate, and severe) have shown reduced GH levels, we hypothesized that decreased GH levels induced by mTBI exerts a negative effect on bone mass and strength over time. This evidence concerns the gene GH1 and osteoporosis.
