Previous reports have shown that in the olfactory system of PD patients, calcium-binding protein-expressing neurons are highly co-localized with α-synuclein, which is rarely the case for tyrosine hydroxylase- or somatostatin-positive cells (Sengoku et al., 2008; Ubeda-Bañon et al., 2010).
