These two neuroparalytic diseases are caused by the most potent bacterial exotoxins known to humans, i.e., tetanus and botulinum neurotoxins (TeNT and BoNTs), that enter nerve terminals and display a very specific metalloprotease activity directed to the three SNARE (Soluble NSF Attachment Protein Receptor) proteins VAMP (vesicle associated membrane protein, also known as synaptobrevin), SNAP-25 (synaptosomal-associated protein 25) and syntaxin (STX) [7,8].
