Phenformin has been shown to inhibit cellular proliferation [42, 55], induce apoptosis [43, 46], decrease cell cycle progression through increased expression of the cell cycle inhibitor p21 [55], suppress tumor growth and development in vivo [40, 41, 44–46], activate AMPK and inhibit the mTOR pathway [40, 43], inhibit the mesenchymal-epithelial transition [56] as well as tumor migration [56] and angiogenesis [43].
