LAG3 and cancer: Importantly, the hallmark of exhausted CD8 T cells during chronic viral infection and cancer is the expression of inhibitory receptors such as programed cell death receptor 1 (PD-1), CTL antigen 4 (CTLA-4), T-cell immunoglobulin, mucin-3 (Tim-3), lymphocyte activation gene 3 (LAG-3), and the T-cell tyrosine-based inhibitory motif (ITIM) domain (TIGIT) (48).
