UCP2 and Stroke: Another recent study showed that intraperitoneal administration of DNP reduces theinfarct volume by approximately 40% in a model of focal ischemia-reperfusion injuryin rat brains.8 Interestingly, overexpression of human uncoupling protein 2 (UCP-2) in mice has been shown toreduce brain damage after experimental stroke and traumatic brain injury,9 suggesting that mitochondrialuncoupling might play a role in the prevention of damage.
