IFNG and malaria: Gamma delta T cells have been shown to preferentially expand during malaria infection,127 and the Vδ2 subset secretes high levels of IFN‐γ upon parasite encounter to mediate parasite killing.52 As IFN‐γ has been associated with immunopathology and severe malaria syndromes,7, 128, 129 decreased numbers of these IFN‐γ‐secreting cells would mean reduced inflammation, as has been observed at high exposure levels.
