To date, only 1 case, known as the “Berlin patient,” has been cured of HIV-1 [4] by total myeloablative chemotherapy and total body irradiation treatment for acute myeloid leukemia, followed by 2 allogeneic stem cell transplants using cells from a donor who was homozygous for CCR5 Δ32, rendering the donor cells resistant to R5-tropic HIV-1 infection. Here, CCR5 is linked to acute myeloid leukemia.
