Because protein synthesis is crucial to maintain L-LTP (Sweatt, 2016), our finding that Akt1 deletion results in the impairment of L-LTP (Figure 4) and the associated protein synthesis response (Figure 5) suggests AKT1 may be an important factor in the synaptic and cognitive deficits observed in schizophrenia (Stephan et al., 2006). This evidence concerns the gene AKT1 and schizophrenia.
