High levels of ELOVL4 are found in neurons of the cerebral cortex and portions of the hippocampus [24], consistent with the seizure phenotypes associated with homozygous inheritance of mutant ELOVL4. In particular, neurons in the CA3 region of the hippocampus, a structure intimately involved with epileptogenesis in a number of seizure disorders, show high levels of ELOVL4 [24]. The gene discussed is ELOVL4; the disease is epilepsy.
