Since neurodegenerative processes impacting cholinergic pathways were reported in the brains of Alzheimer’s disease (AD) (Bartus et al. 1982; Davies and Maloney 1976), acetylcholinesterase inhibitors (as donepezil) which inhibit the breakdown of acetylcholine were initially developed and remain the standard treatment of cognitive impairment in AD.
