CALCA and acute respiratory distress syndrome: Neutrophils are recruited to the alveolar space and lung interstitium, thereby producing large quantities of chemokines, such as chemokines KC (CXCL‐1) and MIP‐2 (CXCL‐2) (Lerner, Lei, Sundar, & Rahman, 2016; Rancan et al., 2017), and reactive oxygen species (ROS) (Spassov et al., 2017), and neutrophils play critical roles in the development of ALI.
