Next to its role in lysosomal turnover of fucosylated substrates, FUCA1 is also involved in sperm transport and sperm–egg interactions.10 FUCA1 activity levels are considered to be a biomarker for cellular senescence11 as well as for the diagnosis of hepatocellular cancers.12 Deficiency of human FUCA2 has been shown to protect against Helicobacter pylori adhesion to gastric cancer cells.8 Here, FUCA1 is linked to hepatocellular carcinoma.
