The KLF2 hemizygous arthritic mice also showed higher level of matrix degrading enzymes, matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs), such as MMP9 and MMP13, which activates other proteases and mediates a cascade of matrix degradation process resulting in the destruction of bones, cartilages and articular structures in rheumatoid arthritis [66].
