It could be shown that the pro-inflammatory chemokines CXCL1 and Interleukin 8 (produced by classically activated macrophages) and the anti-inflammatory chemokines CC-chemokine ligand (CCL)2, CCL17, CCL18, CCL22, and Interleukin 1ra (produced by alternatively/M2 activated macrophages) were elevated in BAL of patients with AE-IPF in comparison to stable IPF (26). This evidence concerns the gene CXCL1 and idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis.
