KEAP1 and atherosclerosis: Enhancing Nrf2 activity may be beneficial in diabetic cardiomyopathy, mitochondrial dysfunction, and reducing the effects of aging in the heart; however, the potential exacerbation of atherosclerosis by Nrf2-mediated inflammasome activation in plaque macrophages, along with the lethality of KEAP1 knockout mice, raises a cautionary note to pharmacological activation of Nrf2 as a therapeutic strategy.
