Interestingly, the expression of MITF varies intratumorally and among different melanoma specimens [68], with high expressions being associated with active differentiation or proliferation and relatively low expressions indicating invasion capacity [69]; these findings suggest that high methylation levels at the MITF promoter might be associated with a more aggressive disease and that the higher methylation levels at the MITF gene of primary tumors compared to metastatic tumors have a role in controlling the cell cycle.
