BDNF and major depressive disorder: An intervention study in healthy young men showed that vigorous-intensity exercise, compared with moderate-intensity, resulted in more frequent large increases in levels of brain-derived neurotrophic factor,16 a key factor for the regulation of mood.17 Additionally, greater exercise intensity has been shown to decrease more visceral fat than lesser intensity,18 which increases inflammation,19 an important pathophysiologic factor in depression.20 A recent cross-sectional study reported a positive association between visceral fat area and depressive symptoms.21
