Neurofibrillary tangles in AD brains are aggregates of the tau protein, which is a microtubule-binding protein that has been hyper-phosphorylated by several kinases including c-jun N-terminal kinase (JNK), p38 MAPK and extracellular signal-regulated kinase1/2 (ERK1/2; Pérez et al., 2008; Wang and Liu, 2008). This evidence concerns the gene MAPK8 and Alzheimer disease.
