Studies in mice with serial gene expression analysis (SAGE) showed that MT-II mRNA was identified as the most significant induced transcript in the early phase of ischemic stroke in the ischemic hemisphere, demonstrating that the maximal concentration of MT occurs at 12 and 24 hours after ischemic damage, expressed almost exclusively in astrocytes of the periphery of the infarcted zone, in the hippocampus, corpus callosum, and striatum regions indicating that the MT gene is overregulated during cerebral ischemia [90]. This evidence concerns the gene MT2A and brain ischemia.
