As mentioned earlier in section 3.6, the initial phase of infection of both SRLVs and HIV-1 targets monocyte/macrophage cell lineages but, unlike SRLVs, HIV-1 also infects the CCR5+ CD4+ T cells where it mainly replicates in the gut-associated lymphoid tissues (GALT) early post-infection [128].
