The recent landmark EMPA-REG outcome study reported a striking 35% relative risk reduction in HF hospitalisations with empagliflozin may provide supportive evidence for beneficial effects of SGLT2 inhibition in the setting of CHF.9 A recent analysis of the EMPA-REG study showed that empagliflozin reduced HF hospitalisation and CV death, with a consistent benefit in patients with and without baseline HF.10 This evidence concerns the gene SLC5A2 and hydrops fetalis.
