It has been shown that reducing food intake without malnutrition can prolong lifespan (Mattison et al., 2000; Lin et al., 2002), whereas metabolic sensors regulated by food nutrients, such as mechanistic target of rapamycin (mTOR), sirtuins and adenosine monophosphate (AMP)-activated protein kinase (AMPK), may contribute to the aging phenotype (Finkel, 2015). This evidence concerns the gene MTOR and malnutrition.
