SLC6A3 and eating disorder: Yilmaz et al. (2015) report that due to the link with reward processes, the dopaminergic system has been most extensively studied in terms of epigenetics in eating disorders, which is also pertinent given the role of dopamine in WM (Goldman-Rakic, 1998). Accordingly, there is some indication that those with AN may have increased DAT (SLC6A3; also referred to as DAT) mRNA expression due to hypermethylation of the gene’s promoter region, as well as DRD2 promoter hypermethylation (Frieling et al., 2010), although this is yet to be replicated.
