Therefore, zinc has a protective potential against metabolic syndrome-associated oxidative stress through induction of transcription factors (including (ARE)-Nrf2 signaling) and a subsequent up-regulation of enzymatic and non-enzymatic antioxidants, induction of metallothionein synthesis, its structural role in Cu,Zn-SOD (SOD1), and, finally, its direct antioxidant activity. Here, SOD1 is linked to metabolic syndrome.
