By preventing the transport of iron through the basolateral membrane and thus preventing the dissemination of dietary iron throughout the body, hepcidin has been termed the “master iron regulator.” Interestingly, innate immune signaling induces hepcidin expression and consequently much work has shown that hepcidin is expressed in response to infection by some pathogens, potentially limiting iron from pathogens (Drakesmith and Prentice, 2012).
