Significantly lower levels of EAAT2 gene expression were reported in Alzheimer’s disease subjects in the cortex.36,188–190 In Alzheimer’s disease, EAAT2b immunoreactivity was decreased in the motor cortex.188 In the cerebral cortex, the levels of EAAT2b mRNA were reduced but the proportion of EAAT2b: EAAT2a expression was unchanged relative to disease severity.36 In the same study, gene expression of EAAT2 exon7skipping and EAAT2 exon9skipping were significantly increased relative to EAAT2a expression and disease severity. This evidence concerns the gene SLC1A2 and Alzheimer disease.
