RI breaks down the gastrointestinal (GI) barrier [27] and causes systemic bacterial infection, that is, sepsis [8], depresses the innate immune responses against infectious agents, including production of immunoglobulins, and disturbs the inflammatory responses, including C-reactive protein (CRP), complement component 3 (C3), [10] and the normal balance of inflammatory and anti-inflammatory cytokines and chemokines [8].
