The gene coding for the limiting enzyme for GSH synthesis (GCLC; Glutamate-Cysteine Ligase Catalytic subunit) was associated with schizophrenia and variants of the tri-nucleotide repeat polymorphism in GCLC were more frequent in schizophrenia patients than in controls (GCLC high-risk genotypes).31 The GCLC high-risk genotypes are associated with a decrease of GSH levels in medial prefrontal cortex32 and in fibroblasts.31 Moreover a metabolomic study with patients’ fibroblasts showed altered reactivity to oxidative stress in GCLC high-risk genotypes.33 Here, GCLC is linked to schizophrenia.
