The main active product of RAS, angiotensin II (Ang II), has been suggested to exert multiple physiological and pathological effects on cardiovascular system such as vasoconstriction, alteration in arterial baroreflex sensitivity, induction of vascular smooth muscle cell growth, stimulation of proto-oncogene expression, induction of myocardial hypertrophy and ventricular remodeling (Mehta and Griendling 2007 ▶; Rajagopalan et al., 1996 ▶; Taubman et al., 1989 ▶). This evidence concerns the gene AGT and cardiac hypertrophy.
