A study in rats conducted by Mima and col.35 demonstrated insulin activated the IRS1/PI3K/Akt pathway in both the glomeruli and tubules; however analyzing both a type 1 diabetes model generated by STZ treatment and a type 2 diabetes model by using fatty Zucker strain, it was observed the loss of insulin signaling exclusively in glomeruli, suggesting that these cells are more susceptible to developing insulin resistance. This evidence concerns the gene INS and type 2 diabetes mellitus.
