INS and Hyperglycemia: The mechanism by which IL-6 influences insulin sensitivity is thought to include the following steps: IL-6 is produced by peritoneal fat and can directly enter and stimulate the liver to cause triglyceride secretion (Nonogaki et al., 1995), affect insulin signal transduction, and influence insulin-induced glycogen production in hepatocytes (Senn et al., 2002), the latter of which thereby reduces insulin sensitivity and leads to hyperglycemia (Tsigos et al., 1997).
