THBD and Sepsis: Patients with septic shock had significantly increased serum thrombomodulin levels on days 1 and 3 [day 1: median, 6.9 mU/ml (interquartile range (IQR): 5.8–12.8) and day 3: median, 5.8 mU/ml (IQR: 4.6–10.8)] compared to healthy controls [median, 3.4 mU/ml (IQR: 2.3–4.2)] (p = <0.001 and 0.001, respectively) and those with sepsis [day 1: median, 2.9 mU/ml (IQR: 1.8–4.7) and day 3: median, 3 mU/ml (IQR: 1.5–3.5)] and severe sepsis [day 1: median, 3.3 mU/ml (IQR: 1.3–8.6) and day 3: median, 4.4 mU/ml (IQR: 0.5–6)] (p = <0.001 and 0.001, respectively).
