Studies have compared the molecular, epigenetic, and phenotypic features of trophoblast SCs (brought to intermediate EMT states through MAP3K4 inactivation, or SNAI1 upregulation) to that of invasive breast cancer cells, finding significant similarities between their “metastable” EMT states, both characterized by enhanced stemness functions, such as self-renewal, multi-lineage potential, and motility [35]. The gene discussed is SNAI1; the disease is breast cancer.
