It is interesting to note that although the Ank-1(MRI61689) mutation was predicted to produce a truncated protein, a full-length alternative spliced transcript with a skipped exon was also found (Huang et al. 2016); possibly indicating that Ank-1(MRI61689) did not behave as a null mutation, consequently exhibiting different mechanisms of malaria resistance compared to other nonsense mutations. This evidence concerns the gene ANK1 and malaria.
