Although histology samples did not show any differences in the inflammatory status of patients with IBD prior to or after hypoxia, immunostaining for p62 of distal colon sections showed a trend towards reduced protein levels of p62 1 week after hypoxia in HV and patients with CD, indicating a hypoxia-mediated increase in autophagy flux (Fig. 1g, arrowheads). This evidence concerns the gene SQSTM1 and inflammatory bowel disease.
