In this regard, SCFA were shown to bind to, and signal through GPR41 (FFA3/FFAR3), GPR43 (FFA2/FFAR2) [37–39], and GPR109a [40], and recent evidence points to a direct and indispensable role for GPR43 in mediating the protective roles of SCFA in IBD. This evidence concerns the gene FFAR2 and inflammatory bowel disease.
